Description

Here is a saint statue that I got in the mail today. It is of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, who is the first Native American to become a saint in the Roman Catholic church. She is the patroness of Ecology and the Environment. The front also has her prayer that goes says this on the front:

"O God, who, among the many marvels of Your Grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and of the St. Lawrence, the pure and tender Lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, grant we beseech You, the favor we beg through her intercession, that this young lover of Jesus and of His Cross may soon be counted among the Saints of Holy Mother Church, and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire to imitate her innocence and faith. Through the same Christ Our Lord.

Amen."

Her box also comes with her biography as well which says this:

"Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
  Born 1656-Died 1680

Near Auriesville, New York, Kateria Tekakwitha was born as the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin woman who was a Christian. At a very young age, she became an orphan during a smallpox epidemic that took her mother and father. Kateri's encounter with smallpox also left her with poor eyesight and a scarred face. When Kateri was near 20 years old, she was converted and baptized by father Jacques de Lamberville who was a Jesuit missionary. Her conversion to Christianity caused the members of her Indian tribe to become hostile toward to her. They treated her very poorly and with little respect. Kateri ran away from the abuse of her tribe to the Christian Native American village of Sault-Sainte Marie. During her life in this colony, she was  very dedicated to her faith, prayer and the care of others that were in need or those were old. She took the vows of chastity and became known for her life of spirituality. Kateri died at the early age of 24 in Chaughnawaga, Canada. The devotion to Kateri Tekakwitha is believed to have established the ministries that are Native American in Catholic Churches throughout North America. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II and became the first Native American to be declared a Blessed. Today, many continue the pilgrimage to her place of birth and where she lived and died. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized as a saint on October 21, 2012.

Feast Day: July 14"

I'm kind of glad that there is a Native American saint in the Catholic church now. Maybe there will be more soon
